Tigger’s slowdown

Because I am typically in movement, whether that’s training, tackling mountains or unearthing the latest business possibility, friends have called me Tigger. But that changed about two years ago, when Tigger couldn’t even keep up with Eeyore. I had no energy, unexplained significant weight gain despite no changes in diet or activity, brain fog, and a fraction of my usual motivation and enthusiasm. I consulted physicians ranging from sports medicine specialists and nutritionists to naturopaths and MDs. Some of their solutions started to resolve the problem, but I went from perhaps 60% of my usual, hyperactive self to maybe 70% on a good day. I had to put my personal training practice on hold, and discovered that even a half day of desk work decimated me.

Everything changed when I saw a functional medicine nurse practitioner who was supposed to just be conducting intake for other treatment. Her diagnosis and treatment plan had me feeling like a new person in less than a week. Maybe not Tigger-esque levels, but up to 80% or better of my usual self, with steady, consistent traction after that first week.

She discovered that those thyroid panels that “weren’t out of range” (for most people) and thus not treated with any urgency actually showed
sub-clinical hypothyroidism for me.

And as I suspected after years of researching possibilities via Facebook, Google, PubMed and more, several years of loss and change – losing both parents in short order, divorce, buying/moving into two different houses, one in a new city, and launching another business – had taxed my adrenals.

Because of my own experiences, one of my primary focal points for 2019 will be offering fitness and wellness coaching for people diagnosed with – or even strongly suspecting – thyroid and adrenal issues. But I’ll refer you to a specialist to get a diagnosis before we proceed too far in the wrong direction – I obviously know how that feels, and it’s not good.
