Diary of a water-hater

“I hate water. How can I hydrate enough?” Don’t worry. I get you. Throughout most of my life, the only reason I could find to hydrate was to perform better in competitions. Everyday life? That’s what coffee and Red Bull are for!

Eventually, my body rebelled if I didn’t give it the same amount of attention it got when competing — except now it demanded that level of care just to function in everyday, more-sedentary life, much less exploring black-diamond runs and other things that triggered my joy.

One thing that helped me hydrate more consistently was finding things to boost the (non)flavor of water. Below are a few of my favorites:

Nuun: Not only does this make your water taste better, but it provides you with electrolytes that are crucial for everyday functions. Without them, you can experience the following symptoms, and more-severe health problems.

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Confusion
  • Gut issues
  • Muscle cramps, spasms and weakness
  • Numbness

Bitters: Some have tiny amounts of alcohol — The Bitter Housewife has options with and without — but others, like All the Bitter, are created with glycerine, so are safe for those who want to avoid alcohol. They are the perfect addition to your favorite sparkling water. (I recommend unflavored options, but you could have some fun with the right combination of flavored sparkling water and bitters!)

Another way to stay hydrated is to always have a water bottle on hand. I recently discovered collapsible water bottles, which are handy when you have finished off what you have and haven’t discovered a place to replenish.
